Get Into It: FLO!
By now, you must have heard about Flo. If you haven’t, they definitely should be on your radar. Flo is a female R&B trio consisting of: Stella Quaresma, Jorja Douglas and Renée Downer from London and they are the UK’s latest girl group obsession.
The group made noise when they teamed up with Grammy nominated hit-maker MKEK and dropped their debut single “Cardboard Box” back in March 2022. The single has been dominating the charts as it has subsequently accumulated over 3 million views on YouTube and over 10 million streams on streaming platforms.
“Everyone needs a great break-up song, so it’s really just [like] about getting over the bad period and now you feel empowered and now you feel good about yourself”, says Renée (in an interview with Genius).
On July 6, 2022, the ladies went on to release their sultry second single titled “Immature”. In the song, they express their irritations dealing with emotionally unavailable, indecisive partners. Accompanied with the song, they released the music video which has accumulated over 1 million views on YouTube and over 2 million streams on streaming platforms.
Not long after, the group announced they would be releasing theirn5-track debut EP titled “The Lead”, which has personally been on constant rotation for me. In addition to “Cardboard Box” and “Immature”, the EP also features 3 new songs which include “Summertime”, “Another Guy(Acoustic)” and my personal favourite “Feature Me”. Some of the group’s musical influences include: Brandy, Faith Evans and Destiny’s Child to name a few which are evident on this project.
As R&B groups (specifically female R&B groups) are so rare in the music industry today, it is so refreshing to see this trio take the industry by storm. What I love most about this group is their sound — the harmonies, riffs/ runs and the production. These ladies have definitely have paid homage to the late 90’s/ early 2000’s R&B sound while still sounding unique and authentic. If you’re a fan of that throwback R&B sound, I would highly recommend that you give their music a listen.
